John Shoemake, age 55 in 1850, born in SC. ***Research from the 1880 census showed George was born in Illinois while his father and mother were both born in Tennessee. His father was A.J. (Jackson) Shoemake. His wife was Mahala Smith. Her father was William D. Smith and her mother's name was Emily, who was 37 in 1870, being born about 1833. Mahala's siblings were 8 in number. George and Mahala had one child in 1880. Her name was Nellie, age 1, in 1880. The couple were living in Overton County, Tennessee, District 11, #187.
